I have been part of the International Training Programme (ITP) since Bristol Museums, Galleries & Archives joined as a partner in 2010. We have had so many interesting museum professionals visit Bristol over the years, and it has been fascinating to meet the Fellows, all with different approaches and ideas. Huge thanks to the British Museum for starting the programme, and more importantly for keeping it going for so many years.
I went to Mumbai in 2015 for the anniversary meeting, which was a brilliant idea to bring so many of the Fellows back together. In a working group ITP fellow focused on looking at the components which ultimately identity a city. Our team settled on Bristol – how it has seen migration for centuries and welcomed (or not) people coming from all over the world for different reasons.
A further workshop in Bristol refined the hurried, broad ideas from Mumbai into a focused plan – and that’s what you see here – how Bristol is home to many communities, and how sometimes what happens here is very similar to what happens in another country, another culture, thousands of miles away.
